Snacks for Cholesterol

Cholesterol is the substance that the liver produces to make cells, produce hormones, and supply vitamins the body needs. We also get cholesterol from our diet which can lead to high levels of cholesterol in the arteries. Cholesterol is not all bad, however. The body needs this substance to perform certain functions. The good cholesterol, or HDL, carries the bad cholesterol, or LDL, to the liver to be broken down. 2. Oatmeal parfait
Both oatmeal and Greek yogurt have been linked to lower levels of LDL. Oatmeal helps lower levels because of its soluble fiber content. Greek yogurt is linked to higher levels of HDL. To make a parfait, mix fresh fruit or berries with lemon juice. Mix honey, almond milk and oats together. In a mason jar, add half of the mixed fruit to the bottom. Then add the oat mix. Top with the rest of the fruit and let it sit in the fridge overnight. Top with low sugar Greek yogurt before serving.

3. Bean dip
Beans are not only a good source of protein, but they can also help LDL levels as well. Beans are full of fiber which can prevent cholesterol from entering the bloodstream. A bean dip can be made by mixing a can of black beans, mashed avocado, lime juice, and a flavorful tomato salsa.

4. Avocado toast
Avocados help lower LDL cholesterol because they contain antioxidants and monounsaturated fat that affect LDL levels. Avocados make a nutritional breakfast as well. The healthy fat in avocados paired with whole grain bread keeps you full longer. To make it, cut the avocado lengthwise around the pit. Discard the pit and scoop the fruit out of the peal and mash with a fork. Add lemon or lime juice and a small amount of olive oil. Serve over whole grain bread and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

5. Fresh fruits rich in pectin
Pectin is in fruits such as apples, oranges, grapefruit and other citrus fruit. These fruits are great for lowering LDL because of the soluble fiber content. Some great ways to enjoy these fruits are in smoothies, as a quick snack, or in a colorful fruit salad.
